One Class Prepared Me For My Online Business
PREPARATION FOR MY ONLINE BUSINESS
I don’t quite recall which book I read it in but the author had reviewed every course that was taught at 4 of the top Business Schools in the nation. Throughout his investigations, he could not even find one course on sales.
In the blog post (Your Online Business- It’s How You Learn), I wrote the following:
We don’t want you to think we put education down (somewhat) but there has to be a value in the education that one receives. I have a 4 year degree in a Ivy League School myself (Cornell University). In his book, The Education of Millionaires, Michael Ellsberg states that after 4 years of education in an Ivy League School (Brown University), the only courses that apply to his career are his classes in Public Speaking and Writing.
In all my years of my college training, one class prepared me for my online business. As stated above, one of the 2 courses that earned merit was my Public Speaking class. During the semester I took that class, we were informed we would each have to deliver 4 speeches.
The first speech would be an introductory speech (which was the easiest). Then there were 2 prepared speeches on specified topics. Finally, the speech that terrorized me was the Impromptu Speech. For this speech, we would be given the topic on a flash card as we stood in front of the room.
This was the most important day of my entire College Education. It taught me the meaning of the word: FEAR (False Evidence Appearing Real).
USING THE IMPROMPTU SPEECH FOR YOUR ONLINE BUSINESS
The real eye opener for me was that this taught me a skill of being able to talk to someone else without knowing what the conversation was going to be. It goes without saying to realize there is a requirement of practice. The first thing that comes to mind for me is making telephone calls. You do not know who you are going to talk to or what their agenda will be!
If you can’t talk to someone, then you can’t build an online business. (notice I said online business) When Networking went online, everyone breathe a relief. NOW THEY DON’T HAVE TO TALK TO ANYONE!
You would think that would be the case. However, business building requires Building Relationships!
You can build that relationship by email, IM or Skype but sometime it becomes necessary to get on the phone and talk. With our online businesses often being International, we often approach a language barrier. (There is always Google Translate!)
The people that may try to pull you down might say to you: You can’t change the World!
Just say to them: I will only try to influence my part!
